Our students are REGULAR PEOPLE – homemakers, small business owners, trades people, teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, philanthropists, missionaries, retirees, and students from elementary to graduate school. That’s not to say they are not SPECIAL people. It takes a certain level of curiosity and desire to grow and reach out to motivate someone to learn another language. But you don’t have to be a scholar. Many of our students have not been in a classroom for decades. And most were nervous and tentative in the beginning. But they decided to go for it and take that first step. Time and again we see trepidation quickly give way to the excitement of learning. And as they make progress and realize their goal is attainable, the progress boosts their motivation.
HOMESCHOOLERS
Our homeschooling community, which was initially about ten percent of our business, has grown exponentially with the introduction of our Homework & Practice Books and Free Instructional Videos. We started getting more calls and noticed we were getting interesting testimonials from homeschooling parents.
Our Free Instructional Videos, coupled with the supporting Homework & Practice Books, empower parent-tutors to be involved in teaching their children Spanish even when they themselves don’t speak the language, and at a fraction of the cost of a private Spanish tutor.
In no subject is the advantage of homeschooling more evident than in foreign languages, where individualized instruction creates a genuine competitive advantage over traditional group classes. Conventional language curriculum and materials were designed for a classroom environment, prioritizing broad exposure rather than deep mastery, and therefore do not capitalize on the unique strengths of a homeschool setting. FINAL MILE’s Español Para Mí is a complete, structured system that supports both language acquisition and grammatical understanding, making it especially well-suited for homeschool families.
The program is different than most homeschooling Spanish programs. The grammar reviews and comparisons to English give the student a very strong foundation that enables them to do much more than the traditional fill-in-the-blank. The homework exercises review the video lesson, provide many examples in both English and Spanish, ask the student to translate sentences from English to Spanish AND Spanish to English, and finally guides the student to construct original sentences which are true in their life using all the other sentences as templates. This approach makes it possible for the student to start expressing their own thoughts much faster than with other programs.
The program is designed for the student to learn Spanish without the need for a tutor. However, it also lends itself very well to a parent/tutor who wishes to be involved. The program provides a natural, ready framework for tutor and student to work together doing repetition, dynamic changes, and dialogue. 55+ COMMUNITY
It has been very interesting to watch our business grow. When we launched in 2019, we did not know what demographics would be attracted to our offering. Right away, we noticed the medical community started to make up a noticeable percentage of our students. But we also started to notice another demographic approaching more tentatively. They were calling and asking a lot of questions. They were starting with the smaller packages, but quickly upgrading to the longer-term programs. These were our first seniors.
We have watched this segment of our FINAL MILE community grow steadily and significantly, a lot of it by word-of-mouth. It has been very rewarding and encouraging to watch these initially tentative students surprise themselves and be delighted with their progress. Our teachers love working with them. The friendships formed between teachers and students perdure long after the teaching is over!
Many older adults are hesitant to take on the challenge because they have been away from the classroom for quite some time and are not confident of their learning ability. It is very rewarding for us to watch this fear dissipate in the first couple of sessions. We find that older adults have significant advantages when it comes to learning a language – life experience, more extensive vocabularies, discipline, and time management. Retirees usually have more time to dedicate to the task and are more relaxed and able to focus. Often, they also have more freedom to travel. All of this contributes to motivation, which is the single most important determinant of success.
Many of these senior Spanish learners are adult missionaries. They go to Spanish-speaking countries repeatedly, for extended periods of time, to help with a variety of charitable projects. They quickly recognize that language ability takes the experience to a much higher level because they can engage directly with the local community. Direct communication fosters trust, friendship, cultural understanding, and a sense of connection that simply cannot be achieved with a translation device or even through an interpreter.
We have had the privilege of working with many retirees preparing for these journeys. It has been truly inspiring to witness how their strong motivation to serve motivates them to learn and accelerates their progress. For these students, language study is a practical and personal tool for building relationships, offering support, and fully participating in daily life abroad.
Another important source of motivation for many of our seniors is cognitive stimulation. Countless recent studies have revealed that learning a new language as an adult stimulates the brain and helps to prevent degenerative neurological disease. For a list of some recent articles, click here.
Though we have also noticed this segment of our student community grow with the introduction of our FREE Instructional Videos, many still choose to couple them with LIVE One-on-One lessons. They use the videos to review the lessons. As they get more comfortable with the videos, they start PRE-viewing the videos in preparation for the live lesson, which accelerates learning because class time can be used for questions, practice, and conversation.
Important Note: ALL our Instructors have learned at least one new language as adults. Having a first-hand understanding of the challenges helps them relate to adult students and makes them much better instructors.
